Pin-type moisture meter

The ST8040 reads moisture in wood and building materials with a pinned probe and seven calibrated material modes — from timber and panels through concrete, plaster and mortar to brick — and shows ambient air temperature from −10 to 50 °C on the same backlit display. Readings settle in 0.5 s at 0.1 % resolution and ±2 % accuracy.

Ranges are material-specific by design: the same 15 % reading means saturated timber but a dry cement screed. Select the mode before measuring, and stay on Material 1 when the material is unknown.

FAQ

How accurate is the ST8040?

Moisture reads to ±2 % and air temperature to ±1 °C, with 0.1 % / 0.1 °C resolution. Take several readings at different spots and use the average, as moisture varies across timber and masonry.

Which material mode should I choose?

Pick the mode that matches the material under test — see the material table above. When the material is unknown, leave the meter on Material 1 and treat the reading as a relative trend.

Do I need to calibrate it?

No field calibration is required. After every battery change, long-press the power button to enter the self-check; the display shows PH 5 when the meter is in good condition, or HQ when it needs factory service.

Does it measure air temperature as well?

Yes. The NTC sensor covers −10 to 50 °C / 14 to 122 °F at ±1 °C, and both units are selectable in the preset menu.

Can it store or log readings?

No. The ST8040 shows live, MAX and MIN values and can hold a reading, but it has no internal memory or app connection.

How is it powered?

Three 1.5 V AAA batteries, included. The meter shuts down automatically after 10 minutes of inactivity and shows a low-battery symbol when the cells need replacing.

What is the probe like?

Two hardened pins on the top of the housing. For timber, push the pins into the wood; keep fingers away from the pins so the reading is not influenced.
