Which is better, SL-1 or SL-2?
Both are 30–130 dBA industrial. SL-1 emphasizes A-weighting + 31.5 Hz–8 kHz full band + windscreen, suited to outdoors and high-frequency machinery. SL-2 adds C-weighting + simultaneous temp/humidity + tri-color backlight, better for lab and microclimate monitoring.
Does it need periodic verification?
Annual calibration with a 94 dB @ 1 kHz source is recommended; for occupational-health or final-acceptance work, send it to a metrology lab for a certificate.
What to watch for in outdoor testing?
Fit the windscreen to suppress wind noise; hold the mic 1.2 m above ground, >1 m from reflective walls, and read the steady value in A-weighting + SLOW.
Can it measure a baby's cry?
Yes. A-weighting + FAST captures instantaneous sound pressure in the 60–80 dB band.
